Survival Punk | Ep272: Survival Guns 101
Thursday Nov 14, 2024
Thursday Nov 14, 2024
In our latest podcast episode, we cover an important topic for anyone serious about preparedness: the four types of guns every survivalist should consider owning. Whether you’re planning for self-defense, hunting, or general survival scenarios, having the right firearms can make a significant difference. We break down the essentials, discussing the benefits and uses of each type of gun and why they’re crucial for any survival plan.
Handgun
A reliable handgun is essential for personal protection. It’s portable, easy to conceal, and can be quickly accessed in emergency situations. We recommend choosing a handgun that you’re comfortable shooting and carrying, with sufficient stopping power for self-defense. Popular calibers include 9mm and .45 ACP, as they strike a good balance between power and manageable recoil. In the podcast, we discuss the pros and cons of various models and how to choose one that suits your needs.
.22 Long Rifle
The .22 long rifle is an incredibly versatile firearm, perfect for small game hunting and even target practice. It’s lightweight, has minimal recoil, and the ammunition is affordable and easy to stockpile. A .22 can help you hunt small animals for food, making it a valuable tool in any survival scenario. We share tips on finding a reliable .22 rifle and why it’s a must-have for both beginners and seasoned survivalists.
Shotgun (Preferably 12 Gauge)
The shotgun is one of the most versatile firearms you can own. Futhermore, a 12-gauge shotgun can be used for home defense, hunting birds, and even larger game with the right type of ammunition. We suggest opting for a pump-action model, as it’s reliable and easy to maintain.
Defense Rifle
A defense rifle, like an AR-15 or AK-47, is an essential tool for protecting yourself and your family in a serious survival situation. These rifles are effective for both defense and hunting larger game, offering accuracy, range, and power. The AR-15 is known for its modularity, allowing users to customize and modify it to their preference, while the AK-47 is renowned for its durability and simplicity. We dive into the strengths of each, helping you decide which is better suited for your needs.
Tune in to this episode to get a detailed breakdown of these four essential survival guns, their uses, and tips on selecting the right models. With the right knowledge and tools, you can build a well-rounded survival arsenal that prepares you for whatever may come.

Survival Punk | Ep278: Thoughts on Homeschooling
Saturday Nov 09, 2024
Saturday Nov 09, 2024
In our latest podcast episode, we’re exploring why more families are considering homeschooling as an alternative to public school. Concerns about violence, curriculum quality, and the need for individualized learning are just a few reasons homeschooling is growing in popularity. Let’s dive into some key points on why homeschooling might be the right choice for your family and how to make it a fulfilling experience for your child.
Why Public School May Not Be the Best Option
Increasing concerns over safety and curriculum issues have led many parents to explore homeschooling. Reports of violence, bullying, and even a lack of supportive resources are affecting students’ ability to focus and learn. On top of that, many feel that the public school curriculum often misses the mark on important life skills, critical thinking, or even foundational subjects. Homeschooling allows parents to directly influence what their children are learning, tailoring the curriculum to meet their child’s needs.
Exploring Homeschooling Options
If you’re considering homeschooling, there are several options to explore. Online school programs can offer a structured, accredited education from the comfort of home, providing materials and lesson plans that help parents guide their children’s learning. Many families also design their own curriculum, mixing educational resources that suit their child’s strengths and interests. For those looking for flexibility, combining online programs with parent-led instruction can provide a balanced approach.
Building Social Connections
One common concern about homeschooling is the potential for isolation, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Homeschool co-ops and groups are a fantastic way for children to build friendships, practice teamwork, and participate in group activities. Co-ops often offer group classes, sports, and even field trips, allowing homeschooled kids to experience social interaction and develop essential skills alongside peers.
For more insights, join us in this episode as we break down the benefits, options, and tips for a rewarding homeschooling experience!

In Episode 55 of The Kershner Files, Dave celebrates the election results and the overwhelming feeling that we are shifting away from the imminent beginning of the second Civil War and possibly even WWIII. Somewhere in the middle of all that reverie he manages to still provide the standard updates for PMs, Survival Realty, and state specific gun shows. After all that election talk Dave closes the show by reviewing an article regarding the concealment of gear and supplies so they aren’t confiscated. Articles/topics discussed:

Survival Punk | Ep257: 5 Nonfiction Survival Books
Wednesday Nov 06, 2024
Wednesday Nov 06, 2024
Join me today as I discuss 5 Nonfiction Survival books to check out. I give a definitive one for some of the books; others are a category you need to fill.
When it comes to a straight Survival Book I don’t have an end-all-be-all pick. To be honest it doesn’t even matter which one you buy and you will most likely get more than one anyway. I talk about a few of my favorites. Cody Lunden’s books, Emergency by Neil Strauss, and a few others. All old books can probably be found in a used bookstore.
My number one most recommended nonfiction survival books is Back to Basics. This one book has so much information in it. If you wanted one book to rebuild society after a collapse I would recommend this one. It has everything you need from building a house to farming to canning and much more.
I talk about the great wild edibles book The Foragers Harvest by Samuel Thayer. This is an absolute must-have in my opinion.
Next is The Survival Medicine Handbook: The Essential Guide for When Help is NOT on the Way by Doc Bones and Nurse Amy. If you’re going to have only one medical book this should be it.
